How to Care for your Synthetic Wig

HOW OFTEN TO WASH YOUR WIG.....

The amount of time between cleanings of your wig depends largely on your lifestyle and environment. For normal wear, a good rule of thumb to use is to wash and condition your wig every 7-10 wearings or so. If you work in an environment with more pollution, such as in a restaurant where you are exposed to kitchen grease, or a place where there is a lot of cigarette smoke, you may want to wash your wig more often. Remember, the nose knows, and if your wig doesn't smell fresh to you, it won't smell good to others around you either. In any case, I wouldn't wash the wig any more than about once a week as washing a wig too often can cause it to wear out more quickly.

Of course, you can always increase the life of any synthetic wig or hairpiece by using a good leave-in conditioner.

CLEANING AND CONDITIONING...

1) Draw enough cool water in a large pan or bowl to immerse hairpiece well. Don't use hot water or it will remove body and may damage fiber.

2) Dissolve approximately one tablespoon of wig cleaner or shampoo, along with one tablespoon of baking soda. Swish hairpiece around in solution. If front of cap and/or hair area has makeup on it, make a paste of baking soda and shampoo and gently scrub with an old toothbrush until clean. Baking soda acts as a cleaning booster and will usually cut though the heaviest makeup or styling product residue in the hair or on the cap.

3) Rinse well in plenty of cool water.

4) Draw a pan or tubful of fresh water. Dissolve one or two tablespoons of conditioner in water. Swish and work mixture throughout piece. Do not rinse. Lay piece on towel and pat to remove excess moisture.

5) Pin piece on wig form and pick or comb out gently, starting from ends and working up strand to root area. At this point, I recommend using a leave in conditioner to refresh the wig fiber and make the wig feel soft and manageable. Arrange hair to resemble desired style. Let dry overnight for maximum curl retention. If time is an issue, a blowdryer may be used but don't get the dryer too close to the fiber and use it on cool only.

HEAT ROLLERS:

Heat rollers or a steam setter (such as a Caruso) may be used on synthetic fiber.   Roll each strand carefully around the roller keeping the ends smooth to reduce "fish-hooking", which makes the ends look fuzzy. Using end papers is recommended. Let the curls get completely cool before brushing or combing out the wig. If using the steam setters, it's a good idea to use a "duckbill" or other similar clip to hold the curls in until they're cool and dry.

SOME TIPS:

CAUTION!
A synthetic wig is made of fine plastic filaments. Excessive heat will damage it. Use caution around oven doors, fireplaces, wall heaters, barbeques, and other uncontrolled high heat sources. The heat will melt the fiber and cause it to look frizzy. Most of the time, steam can smooth it out, but the fiber will lose a certain amount of body and resilience after having been heat-frizzed. If a little extra care is taken with your wig, you will extend the life of your wig and it will look nice for a long time.

FOR FIRST TIME WEARERS...

The brand-name tag goes in the back.

Grasp the wig at the back bottom with both hands, and position the front firmly at your forehead. Then pull the whole cap back and down so that it covers your head. The wig should not cover your ears. If you have ever used a latex swimming cap, the procedure is very similar.

There are two little tabs at the ears and they should be positioned so that they are equal on both sides in front of your ears. This will let you know that your wig is on straight.

Most wigs today have a small covered wire stay sewn inside the ear tabs. These should be bent a little and curved in toward your head. When the wig is positioned correctly at the sides, press gently on the stays so they lie flat against your temples. This will give you a more custom fit at the temples. The front of the wig should be positioned right at, or slightly behind, the hairline.

If you don’t have hair, place your first three fingers together just above your brow bone and where the top edge of your index finger is should approximate your natural hairline.

There are adjustment straps in the back of your wig. They may be used to tighten or loosen the wig for a comfortable fit.

How to Care for your Human Hair Wig

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY HUMAN HAIR WIG?

Although it is the most natural and durable of all fibers from which wigs are made, human hair is more difficult to take care of, because each time it gets wet, it will lose the style, just as your own hair does. The only styles that would be fairly easy to take care of would be if the wig has a good perm in it, and is worn just moussed and scrunched without using anything else to style it. Also if you wear your hair in a straight, smooth style, a human hair wig would be ok. Otherwise, some kind of heat would have to be used to style it.

The same is true to a certain extent with human-synthetic blends. The synthetic hair holds it shape fairly well after washing, but the style may have to be touched up a little with a curling iron to refresh the style--lots less hassle than styling it again from scratch like 100% human hair.

The HairLife blend by Jacquelyn is made of about 50% human hair and 50% Advanced Elura synthetic fiber. This is a good combination because it give you the best of both worlds--the longevity of human hair, along with the synthetic's ability to hold its shape after washing.

A curling iron set on LOW or WARM may be used on most synthetic fibers. Even though the blend contains human hair, one must defer to the synthetic when using heat methods for styling. Hot rollers or steam setters are OK too, but I recommend using end papers in order to keep the ends of the hair smooth.

CARE AND STYLING PRODUCTS

Although the hair used in making human hair wigs is grown on a human head, most of it isn't like the hair growing out of your own head. After harvesting, it can be chemically processed to remove the cuticle in order to minimize tangling. (This does not include Virgin hair, which has never been chemically processed in any way. Most manufacturers use the processed hair because it doesn't have to be harvested as carefully as Virgin hair, and is, therefore, less expensive to produce.)

In addition, hair from India or Asian sources starts out as dark brown or black, and is bleached out and dyed back for uniformity of color, then the hair is mixed and blended into whatever colors the company requires. So the hair has already gone through a triple chemical processing before it becomes a wig. For this reason, only shampoos, conditioners, sprays, and other styling products formulated especially for processed hair should be used. Oil-based products, like the ones we use on our hair, can coat processed hair and make it appear dull and lifeless.

We carry a full line of products made especially for human hair wig care.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WASHING YOUR HUMAN HAIR WIG:

Draw enough lukewarm water in a large pan or bowl to cover the wig or hairpiece well.

Dissolve a capful of prescribed wig shampoo, along with 1 tablespoon of baking soda.

Swish wig or hairpiece around, squeezing hair gently. Keep hair moving in one direction or it may tangle. If front of cap has makeup on it, it may be scrubbed gently.

Rinse wig well with plenty of lukewarm water.

Dissolve a capful or so of wig conditioner in tub or pan of water to cover well. Work mixture through wig hair (remember: same direction). Rinse with fresh water. Lay wig out on towel and pat out excess water.

Pin on wig form and pick or comb out gently. At this point, a detangler such as Brandywine or SeCure Ultra-Loc may be used. If working on a long wig, start combing out the hair at the ends and work up the strand to the roots. Wig may be set in rollers if desired and placed under hood dryer, or left to dry overnight. A hot curling iron may be used on 100% human hair wigs, but on human-synthetic blend wigs, don't let the iron get too hot or it will damage the synthetic wig fiber.

A good indication of when the iron is too hot for the synthetics is that, instead of curling the fiber, it appears straight and limp when you remove the iron. In the worst case, the fiber melts and frizzes or disintegrates. Too much heat can also make the fiber appear frizzy because it damages the fiber. The bottom line here is to be careful when using a curling iron on any synthetic or blend wig. If the iron gets too hot when working with a human-synthetic blend, mist the barrel of the iron with water to cool it down.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUMAN AND SYNTHETIC HAIR?

Synthetic hair is simply very fine plastic filaments. The structure is very different from human hair. Synthetics are easier to handle, due to their ability to hold the basic curl after washing. Depending on the simplicity of the style, some of them require very little styling. The life of a good synthetic wig is about 1 year, but can last longer with proper care.

As a rule, human hair is heavier in weight than synthetic fiber. However, there are different qualities of human hair, depending on where it comes from. High quality European hair is considered the best hair in the world because of it's strength and texture. This type of hair is the rarest of all, and is very expensive. Wigs made from this hair run into the thousands of dollars.

Don't be fooled into purchasing a poor quality human hair wig, thinking that all human hair is created equal. Some human hair can be coarse in texture, resistant and very hard to style. These wigs sell cheap and are cheaply made, and if you think you're saving money by purchasing one of these, you'll probably wish you hadn't later. Shop around and ask questions before you make your selection.

High-quality Asian hair has been used in the manufacture of quality wigs for many years, and this type can be chemically treated to resemble the texture of European. High quality Asian hair is the type of hair that Jacquelyn uses to make many of their wigs. They look very nice and are relatively inexpensive for the quality.

Then there is Indo hair, which comes from Indonesia, and Indian hair from India. These types of hair are soft and fine in texture like good European, and is the hair of choice for most cranial prostheses and hair replacement companies today. This type of hair is more expensive than Asian, but if one is wearing a partial piece, because of it's silkier texture, it will blend very well with finer textured hair.
WHAT IS THE BEST HAIR STYLE FOR MY FACE SHAPE?

Here's how to find the hair styles that work best for you. Styles should accentuate your best facial features, while minimizing your less-than-flattering features.

TO DETERMINE YOUR FACIAL SHAPE:

1. Pull hair back and secure with pins or a headband so hair is completely off the face.

2. Stand 12" from a mirror and look straight into it -- or have someone take a picture of you facing straight into the camera with your hairline showing.

3. Outline your face with a marker on the mirror with tracing paper, or on the photo.

4. Now look at your face shape in the mirror or photo drawing. Choose the shape that most closeley resembles your own. If your face is a combination of shapes, choose styles based on the following criteria, which most flatter your particular shape.

OVAL FACE----Oval is considered by many to be the ideal and most versatile face shape, since nearly every style looks becoming on this facial shape. Hair pulled back or worn in an updo shows off the oval face the most. In long styles, a great classic look is a center or side part with hair touching shoulders. The short-layered looks with curls and a close extended nape focus on this oval.

FASHION TIP: Wide-open necklines or close-necked collars emphasize the oval face.

ROUND FACE----This shape is round at the cheeks and a has a circular form. There is more of the face near the ears and gradually less curving upward and downward. The goal: to slim your face. Hair below the chin line should be worn with a face-lengthening center part; for hair above chin line, wear an off-center part to interrupt the roundness. Height at the crown and a bare forehead lengthen and slim the face. It's best to avoid short and sleeked-back hairstyles. In short-angled styles, you are best seen with hair brushed away from the face, building extra crown height to narrow the roundness of your features. Though bangs shorten the face, you can wear curly, tousled bangs or a soft wispy fringe . Always avoid full, straight-falling bangs. Wear longer styles closer to the face to give length.

FASHION TIP: Avoid rounded, scoop necklines. Use vertical clothing lines and v-neck lines to add angles to the roundness.

SQUARE FACE---- This face is characterized by an angular jaw and square brow, with jaw and brow being nearly the same width. The goal: soften the sharp angle of jawline and minimize squared-off brow. Hairstyles which emphasize the cheekbones mid-line of the face are most flattering. Bangs and waves at the temple also soften the square. Wear your best styles with hair swinging forward onto the face to reduce the angles. Hair length is best about 1-1/2" below the chin, or extending to shoulder length to reduce and soften the squareness of your jaw. Hair worn on the forehead is always perfect for you, as long as it is wispy or fringed. Never wear straight bangs. Hair turned under at the bottom also will narrow the width of the jaw. Styles in loose curls and waves add extra dimension to the square face.

MAKEUP TIP: Makeup that emphasizes the cheekbones softens the square. Darken the outer corner of the jaw to soften the lines and make them recede.

PEAR-SHAPED FACE ----This shape has a wide chin and a narrow forehead. The goal: narrow the chin and widen the forehead. Wear your hair wide and full at the top of the head and temples, brushed away from the face and up toward the ear to widen forehead; from the ear, angle hair forward toward the chin to soften and narrow a strong jaw. Styles which are wide and full at the chin will emphasize the width of the jawline, and should be avoided. The wedge styles, which are brushed away from the face and give width at the forehead are perfect for this facial shape.

CLOTHING TIP: Avoid ruffled necklines, which add fullness to the lower face. Closed-neck collars and necklines are best.

MAKEUP TIP: Highlight the forehead and temples to add width to the upper half of your face.

HEART SHAPED FACE---- This is a triangular-shaped face. This face is narrow at the jaw line, wider at the eye line, cheek bones and even more at the brow line. The goal: diminish forehead width and create a wider, fuller jaw effect. Soft bangs flatter this shape, whether curly or smoother. Or wear a side part with soft three-quarter bangs swept over one side to balance your forehead width. The styles should be fuller at the jaw line. Upswept at the sides and off the forehead further emphasize your feminine appeal . A medium length to mid-neck is your best look. Fullness at the bottom, with hair directed forward onto the cheeks gives you the appearance of a wide chin. The soft layered bob styles are ideal. Or if you prefer, curls or loose waves, shaped from the ears down, add width and fullness to your chin.

CLOTHING TIP: Use V-neck and "Sweetheart" neck lines to repeat and emphasize the heart shape.

MAKEUP TIP: Highlight the temples if you are not wearing bangs to broaden the forehead.

OBLONG FACE----This shape is long and thin, often with a chin that tends to look pointed. There is very little difference in width between the top, middle or bottom of your face but it is more rounded than the square face. Hairstyles should add width and fullness to the sides of the face and around the eyes, cheekbones and ears. This shape benefits from a low side part, with a sweep of hair brushed across the forehead and secured with a comb. The look of volume with an asymmetric flow of hair to one side widens your face and reduces length. Straight-falling bangs or bangs blended with the sides of your hair, shorten the overall face length. Your best hair length reaches to the middle of the neck. Favor volume with curly or wavy styles that are very becoming, giving you the illusion of balanced width. Wide curly bob styles are ideal for this shape.

CLOTHING TIP: Avoid long V-necked and vertical lines at the neckline. Use high necklines to shorten the length of the face.

MAKEUP TIP: To shorten the face a bit, use darker foundation, powder or blusher to darken the chin.

HOW CAN I TELL WHAT SIZE CAP I NEED?

The way a wig fits your head is a very important point. A good comfortable fit is necessary if one is to wear a wig for an extended period of time. If the wig is uncomfortable, you won’t wear it. It’s that simple.

To measure your head for a wig, take a cloth or paper tape measure and be sure that it has not been stretched. If you’re not sure, measure it against a metal or plastic ruler for accuracy. Then follow the instructions below:

CIRCUMFERENCE: Start the tape at the middle of your hairline at the forehead. Lay the tape around to the nape hairline (behind the ears) and around the head where it will meet back at the front.

EAR TO EAR: Lay the end of the tape about ½ inch above the little crease at the top of your ear between your ear and your head. Then bring the tape across the top of your head to the other ear at the same point.

FRONT TO BACK: From the front hairline to the back hairline. If you have little or no hair, lay your index, third and ring fingers flat against your forehead just above your browbone. At the top of your fingers would be where a normal hairline would be. Lay the end of the tape at this point and measure back to about an inch below the little (occipital) bone that you can feel at the bottom of your skull.

TEMPLE TO TEMPLE: This is where the earpieces of the wig will rest. Start the tape just in front of your ear, about halfway, just in front of the little cartilage protrusion. Measure the distance across your forehead hairline to the front of the other ear at the same point.

NOW I KNOW MY MEASUREMENT, WHAT IS YOUR WIG SIZE?

ULTRA PETITE SIZES are 19 inches to 20 inches. There are pre-made wigs which will work for this size, but most are either children’s styles or shorter-length adult styles. There are pre-made high-quality synthetic and human hair prostheses which will fit these sizes, but they must be custom styled by a professional.

PETITE SIZES are 20½ inches to 21½ inches. Again, there are wigs which are available for these sizes. (See above) Most wigs can be sized down to fit these measurements without having the cap custom made. If the word "petite" is included in the name of the wig, chances are that the cap size is petite. (The only collection which is the exception is JACQUELYN. There are a couple of wigs that have the word "petite" in the name, but they are not made with a petite cap.)

AVERAGE SIZES are 21½ inches to 22½ inches. Most wigs are made to fit these sizes, but can be stretched or adjusted down about an inch either way to accommodate smaller or larger head sizes. Be aware that cap sizes vary from brand to brand, and you should make sure before you buy that the cap is right for your size. Some caps will stretch better than others, but all can be made smaller.

LARGE SIZES are 23 inches to 24 inches. The best choices for these sizes are JACQUELYN wigs. Most of them are made for the average to large size head, and the cap is more flexible than most other brands. A stock Jacquelyn can usually be stretched to accommodate a 24-inch head comfortably.

CUSTOM SIZES: If your head circumference is smaller than 19 inches or larger than 24 inches, you may need to order a custom made cap. There are various companies that make wigs to accommodate this size range. However, if you want a style that is normally available only in an average size, we can have it made for you in your size. We offer CUSTOM WIGS of all types and will be happy to accommodate your request.
HOW DO I CHOOSE A COLOR?  DO YOU HAVE A COLOR CHART?

A color chart is not available because of the variations in color hues and tones on computer monitors. Colors tend to be misrepresented when viewed on the computer.  When at the salon, we have matching color rings and hair samples for all of our major brands.  We are happy to assist you in matching a color.
WHAT KIND OF WIG CAP WILL WORK BEST FOR ME?

There are two basic types of wig caps, MACHINE-MADE and HAND-TIED.

This is a typical MACHINE-MADE wig cap. Machine-made wigs are crafted on a special sewing machine, and are made of hair WEFTS attached to a pre-constructed base. They are also referred to as "capless" because there is no mesh foundation to attach the hair to. Machine-made caps are the most durable.

This is a WEFT of hair. The hair is doubled over and MACHINE-SEWN along the top to create a long strand of hair. This is also the type of hair strand used for hair extensions and weaving. HAND-TIED WEFTS are also available for hair extensions, but not generally used for making wigs.

This is a typical HAND-TIED wig cap. Hand-tied wigs have caps which are constructed of some type of mesh, usually monofilament or polyester, with individual strands of hair knotted by hand into the mesh.

COMBINATION WIG CAPS

Some manufacturers will offer wigs which have combinations of these different wig constructions. JACQUELYN wigs all have wefted or machine-made backs, but some of their pre-made pieces have HAND-TIED tops, MONOFILAMENT (MICRO-LACE) tops, or FRENCH tops.

MONOFILAMENT-TOP, also known as a MICRO-LACE top. The top section is made of fine, transparent nylon mesh with strands of hair individually hand-tied into it. May be parted anywhere on the top. Very suitable for persons with extensive hairloss, as color of scalp may show through. More expensive because of the extra time and expertise required for hand-knotting each hair. It takes about 25 to 28 hours to completely cover the Monofilament mesh top area with hair. Many manufacturers use 3-4 strands per needle to save on labor, but the results is not as natural looking as the one-hair method that is used by better manufacturers like Jacquelyn and Wig Pro.

FRENCH-TOP CAP made by Jacquelyn. Hair is hand-tied into fine nylon Monofilament mesh, and then a layer of flesh-colored silk material is added underneath, creating the appearance of a scalp with hair growing out of it. This is a wonderful feature as it solves the problem often encountered by the difference in complexion colors with skin tops. Silk material may be colored with strong tea to match darker scalp colors. Suitable for all types of hairloss. About the same price as MONOFILAMENT or MICRO-LACE tops.

Some manufacturers offer other materials or combinations of materials in their caps. These wigs are all fully hand-tied all over and offer a very natural appearance because the movement of the hair is similar to the movement of growing hair. Some have full MONOFILAMENT caps, but most of these wigs are some combination of POLYESTER or COTTON netting and MONOFILAMENT mesh.

This is an example of monofilament material with the hair partially hand-knotted into it. As you can see, the color of whatever is underneath will show through creating the most natural appearance possible.

This is a full MONOFILAMENT CAP wig. This model has a POLYURETHANE tape tab along the front and at the nape. It also has POLYESTER NET darts with covered elastic straps behind the ear tabs for flexible adjustment.
This particular unit is available in both average and petite sizes.

This cap is a combination of POLYESTER net in the back with a MONOFILAMENT top. Multi-directional hand-knotting of each individual hair into the mesh allows a natural flow to the hair and versatility to the style. This model also has a POLYURETHANE tape tab along the front.

OTHER TYPES OF TOPS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

HAND-TIED or HAND-MADE TOP--Hair is knotted by hand into a single or double thickness of nylon or polyester mesh, not as fine as the mono mesh, letting the wearer part the hair in any direction, but the base of the wig may show. Part may be created, but must have some lifting, texturizing or backcombing at the base to give the illusion of a part. A good, less-expensive choice if versatility in movement is desired.

MACHINE MADE TOP-- On a MACHINE-MADE top, WEFTS of hair are sewn closely together, sometimes in the direction intended for the style, sometimes in the parted area so that hair must be combed in that direction only. Not as versatile as hand-made top. Most widely available construction and most economical wigs.

These are all examples cap styles available in PRE-MADE wigs. CUSTOM-MADE wigs may be constructed with any combination of materials available.

HOW DO I KEEP MY WIG FROM COMING OFF?

There are several options for attaching your wig to keep it secure. The following are some examples:

TAPE: Double-sided adhesive strips, also available in a roll. Comfortable and very secure. Allows for daily removal of wig. A non-porous tape tab should be installed in the cap to give the tape something to hold onto. Works best when used on bare skin.

TRANSPORE TAPE: Semi-liquid wig adhesive in tape form. Used to create a stronger bond than regular tape. Can be worn from 3 to 5 days.

CLIPS: Attached to the underside of the wig or hair unit. Must have strong, growing hair for attachment of clips. Not recommended for those with fragile hair. Daily wear or longer, depending on your preference.

LIQUID ADHESIVE: Stronger than tape. Works best on bare skin. Lasts up to 5 days without removal. Remove with solvent, or in the case of MAX adhesive which we carry, 99 volume solvent-strength alcohol may be used. This may be purchased at your local pharmacy.

EXTENDED WEAR BONDING: Creates a firm attachment to a hair track with a medically approved "super-glue" type product. Must be applied by a specialist trained in this procedure...a do-it-yourself attempt might well result in disaster. Lasts 3 to 6 weeks. Not recommended for full coverage wigs.

WEAVE: A single tiny cornrow braid around the perimeter of the bald area. In the case of a full wig, single braids may be placed at strategic points around the head. These points act as anchors so that the unit may be sewn in place.

FLEX-COMB: This is a method which is suitable for keeping a wig secure on those people with hair. Here is a picture of this comb:

This item may be found at any supermarket or drugstore in the hair goodies department.

Use a pair of kitchen shears (or other heavy-duty scissors) to cut the comb to the size you want, then stitch the piece of comb to the front and/or back of the wig. This holds the wig securely in place, even on finer hair.

NOTE: The ends of the comb where you cut it may be kind of rough and sharp. It's a good idea to take an emery board or nail file and smooth them off before you sew the piece into your wig.
CAN I GET A 100% HUMAN HAIR WIG IN GREY?

If you want a blended grey color, it would be impractical to order 100% human hair. In the first place, it is very difficult to find white hair for the grey blends. If it can be found, it is terribly expensive. The other consideration would be that all human hair oxidizes (fades) over time, and periodically the darker color would have to be re-colored to match your own hair. If you get 100% human hair in grey, the white hair would take the tint and you wouldn't have a grey blend anymore. Synthetic hair will not take the color and remains white, preserving the original blend. This is why all of the hair replacement companies use synthetic hair for the white part of the grey blends.

Many manufacturers use Yak hair in making white or light grey wigs. This hair tends to be a bit coarser than human hair, but has many of the properties of human hair, and works very nicely where white or very light grey is needed, such as a Santa Claus wig and beard set.

WHAT TYPES OF PRE-DESIGNED ARE THERE?

PRE-DESIGNED/PRE-MADE/STOCK ITEMS

There are many choices today in wigs which are PRE-MADE, and chances are that there is one which will work for you. PRE-MADE or PRE-DESIGNED pieces are units which can be shipped immediately from the wholesalers. They are also called STOCK wigs, because they are wigs that the company keeps in stock, and are generally the styles and colors which are available in their catalogs. Many can be customized with cut, style, size, perm and color. The following are the types of PRE-MADE wigs:

THE THREE BASIC TYPES OF WIGS

A RAW wig (can be human hair or synthetic), is one which comes from the factory with hair that has a basic length but without shaping. It must be cut, shaped, permed if necessary, and styled by a wig professional to look natural. RAW wigs are the most versatile of all wigs, as they are only limited by the talent and imagination of the stylist. Most of the better quality CRANIAL PROSTHESES are of this type.

An UNSTYLED wig is one which has been cut and possibly shaped at the factory, and may have been curled or permed as well, but requires professional attention to make it wearable for the average person. JACQUELYN wigs are of this type. Most of them contain more hair than the average wig, which makes them more versatile, but also makes the initial styling more difficult. Unless you have an experienced wig professional available in your local area to do it for you, we recommend that you purchase these wigs from us styled only.

A PRE-STYLED wig is one which has been cut, shaped and curled at the factory. It is then folded up and packed in a little box or bag with a hairnet around it for shipping to the wholesalers. This is the way most mail-order wig companies ship their products to you. They are the easiest wigs for the customer to handle right out of the box. They may require some combing and arranging of the hair, or finger-picking, scrunching and/or moussing for the finished style. Examples of this type of wig are RAQUEL WELCH, EVA GABOR, , NORIKO, ALAN THOMAS, LOOK OF LOVE, RENE OF PARIS, HENRY MARGU, NORIKO, EUROPEAN NATURALS and MOTOWN TRESS synthetics.

PRE-STYLED wigs are generally synthetic, although occasionally a company may offer PRE-STYLED human hair wigs. A PRE-STYLED human hair wig will already be cut, shaped and permed if the style requires it, but may need some final touches to make it wearable. A human hair style will only last until the wig is washed. The cut and perm will still be there, but the human hair wig will have to be set in rollers or blow-dried and curled with an iron to get the style back. Examples of this type of wig may be found in the JACQUELYN and BEVERLY JOHNSON wig collections.

WHAT IS THE PRICE OF A CUSTOM WIG?

This is similar to asking the price of a vehicle. The price of a custom made wig varies according to the model, quality and options you choose. The following is a list of possible choices for custom wigs:

~ Modify an existing style
~ Full custom starting from scratch
~ Cap size
~ Cap construction
~ Hair type (Human hair, European hair, Synthetic, Blend)
~ Hair length
~ Custom color
~ Hair density
~ Hand tied or machine made

These are all some of the options you would have to consider if you were to choose a custom wig. A semi-custom or custom-made wig can run from around $500 to over $2000 depending on your requirements.

WHAT KIND OF HAIR IS USED TO MAKE WIGS?

Today, wig hair is made of many materials. In addition to human hair, advanced synthetic fibers or a combination of human hair and synthetic fibers are used. Naturally, any of these fibers can be of superior, good, or poor quality. At Alternatives 2000, we carry only wigs with superior and good quality fibers. We avoid carrying those products for street wear which use poor quality human hair and synthetic fibers.

Having said that, we do carry a theatrical line, and also wigs which are suitable for costumes, i.e. "Halloween quality". The latter are wigs made with low quality fiber, have a short lifespan, and are usually very inexpensive. These wigs have a specific purpose, and are not designed for streetwear.

The following paragraphs describe the differences between the various types of hair fibers:

HUMAN HAIR
The Human Hair wigs we offer are fashioned from the best quality human hair available for the price. Generally speaking, the finest texture in wigs continues to be human hair. The major advantage is that you can usually style them the way you want and often change that style very easily. They are like your own hair in responding to complete styling changes, accepting perms or even changing the color. The down side is, just like growing hair, all human hair wig styles lose their shape when wet. Your human hair wig will require re-styling each time you wash it. You can blow-dry it and use hot rollers or a curling iron, or you may wet-set it and dry it under a hood hairdryer. If you want something easier to take care of, a good choice would be the human-synthetic blend. It gives you the best of both worlds--the look, feel, and durability of human hair along with the synthetic's ability to hold its shape after washing.

High quality human hair wigs should give you up to 3-4 years of wear with proper care. If you are looking for high quality human hair wigs, you've come to the right place.

Caution: Some human hair wigs can be made from human hair with poor texture or quality. Just because the label says Human Hair does not mean it is "good quality" hair.

EUROPEAN HUMAN HAIR
This is the finest hair available for wigs. Most European hair is processed to remove the cuticle, and like most other human hair used in wigs, it may be bleached and dyed for uniformity of color. The texture and appearance of European hair depends on its origin. Much of the European hair used in wigmaking today comes from Russia and Turkey.

VIRGIN HAIR
This is hair which has not been chemically permed, tinted or processed to remove the cuticle, only sanitized and blended for color. It is available straight as well as with various natural curl and wave patterns. It is considered the strongest hair in the world, and is the most natural in appearance. Most of the virgin hair used today in making wigs is from Europe.

If you ever wonder if your wig is made of virgin hair, put it to this test - rub 10-20 strands of hair between your thumb and forefinger. If the hair bunches up, it is virgin. If the hair slides, it may be European hair but has had the cuticle removed, or "processed"...therefore it is no longer virgin hair.

The one drawback to virgin hair wigs is that they tend to tangle if not handled properly. The cuticle is still on the hair shaft, and unless care is taken to keep the hair all going in the same direction when washing, tangling may occur. There are wet products are made to minimize the tangling. See the Healthy Essential SeCure products in our Wet Products section.

Be sure to purchase only virgin human hair wigs which are described as "Remi" or "Remy hair". This means that the hair has been harvested with the cuticle going in one direction so that the possibility of tangling is minimized. However, human hair that is meant to be used as virgin hair is normally harvested very carefully and handled to maintain the proper direction. The special handling takes more time and is one of the factors that make this hair more expensive.

Virgin human hair wigs have the most natural appearance and texture and the most comfortable wearing qualities, but they are also the most expensive.

A virgin European human hair wig is the highest quality wig you can buy. However, when considering a virgin human hair wig, be sure to purchase only from an experienced, reputable dealer. Top quality is expensive to produce, and if the price seems to good to be true, it probably is. A good quality virgin European hair wig can cost from about $1500 up. A really top quality one can range from about $2000 to $5000, depending on the way the wig is made.

HUMAN HAIR BLENDS
Human-synthetic blends offer the easy care of synthetics with exceptional flexibility and styling versatility. Like human hair, these blends can be permed for extra body wave or curl. They can also be lightened or darkened to a certain extent with regular hair tint. When using any chemical process on a blend, please keep in mind that the synthetic fiber will not accept the chemical, but the human hair will. Therefore, the amount of change will depend on the percentage of human hair to synthetic.

The high percentage of human hair in the Jacquelyn HairLife blend creates the rich tonal dimensions of color-play most like natural hair, particularly in colors with natural highlights. Blends like this may give you 2-3 years of wear depending on proper care and the quality of the products used.

Human-synthetic blends give you exceptional value for your money...the quality and texture of human hair without the higher cost.

SYNTHETICS
Synthetic wigs are more natural-looking than ever before. Synthetics can be shampooed and dried naturally with minimal care. Less costly than human hair wigs, they retain their style very well but are less responsive to major styling changes than human hair. Synthetics will not accept a perm, nor can the color be changed to a great degree. Remember, synthetic wigs were designed to stay and look the way you originally bought them. Trying to change or restyle them can cause poor or even drastic results. All of our synthetic wigs are of very high quality synthetic fibers. The life of a good synthetic wig can be 1 to 2 years or more, depending on care and quality.

WHY ARE SOME WIGS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHERS?
Like most items you purchase, price is a reflection of quality. The higher the quality...the higher the price. There are many different types of materials than can be used to make wigs, including various types of synthetic fibers and human hair. For example, some synthetic fiber is softer and silkier than other types, therefore, making the wig more expensive. Some materials used inside the wigs are lighter weight and more durable, therefore, increasing costs.
